A Dialogue with the Streaming Maestro
1. Where do you live? Which YoloBox model do you own?
I’m in the US. I have YoloCast and YoloBox Pro. I think I originally got your your original one, and I had that for about a week, and then I found out that it didn’t do what I needed it to do, and I returned that to Amazon, and I bought the the newer one. And it’s been working.
2. How long have you been in the video production industry? What specific content do you typically broadcast?
It’s probably about 20 years. I started with the NFL, the American Football. I started with them, working for them, doing stuff – video, audio, etc. Now I do NASCAR on dirt. It’s dirt racing with sprint cars, everything. And I also do motor cross, indoor motor cross, with motorcycles. And then I’ll do high school football games too.
3. What are the companies you’re working for now?
They’re called The Cushion and Dirt TV. They’re just Internet-based TV stations that charge people a monthly fee. So I started with them. Now what I do is I go to tracks, race tracks, and the newest one is called Switchback, and it’s motorcycle racing, and they have me doing everything, and I’m using the YoloBox (Pro) to do the whole production. If you go to smxlive.tv, that’s the newest one that just started this year. That’s they have thousands of people that come to this race track, so people have to pay to watch it.
4. How did you find YoloLiv and our products?
Your device, I didn’t even know anything really about it. I was looking for something portable, and I just stumbled upon your product. I can’t even remember how I even found out about it.
5. Is the YoloBox Pro your exclusive streaming equipment, or do you utilize other alternatives as well?
The company that I worked for, the production company, they sent me a bunch of equipment, and it failed. And I’m like, I have the YoloBox (Pro). Can I try it? And they said, go ahead try it. And I did it with the network bonding and everything that you guys offer. And they were impressed by it, because I used the RTMP to shoot the signal back to, I call it the mothership. I shoot that RTMP back to the studio, and then they put the graphics up top. In the live timings, like all the graphics and everything, they just get the camera and my angles. I’ll have wireless cameras everywhere, and I’ll be switching just with the Yolo(Box Pro).
6. While streaming, how many camera inputs do you use? Or the more cameras the better?
The more the better. But we don’t like that too. We don’t like to add too many cameras, because it’ll be too much switching, and it’ll make people sick, like they’ll watch the race, watch the event, and all of a sudden, a camera switching constantly.
But we use cameras like up close where the cars are on the race track. I have remote Marshall cameras that’ll transmit back up to the Yolo(Box Pro) and they could see, like down on the track, right there, the cars and everything.
7. Do you mind sharing the details of your setup?
Oh no, there’s no secret. I just show up and I hook up my camera, my main camera, on my tripod, and then I have remote cameras, uh, with my remote devices, their little Marshall cameras and their SDI cameras, so I have to have the Blackmagic SDI and HDMI.
I hook them up, and then I’m tapped into the Arena’s PA system for their announcer, and that comes into the YoloBox (Pro). I usually have a mixer with mate, or the aide have a mixer, and then that’ll shoot into the YoloBox (Pro) also. And all the switching, currently right now is being done with the YoloBox (Pro), but I’m going to probably bust out the old ATEM to help me get some more inputs on it and everything.
8. How do others see your setup?
Everyone like they’re used to when they come see this camera crew that you used to have like Blackmagic stuff all over the place, and all I have is my camera and a couple wireless devices in the YoloBox. And they’re like, what’s that? What’s that? But the other they’re impressed with it. I’m impressed with it.
9. Is YoloBox Pro a great tool for you?
Your product makes my life a lot easier. I can set up a lot of camera operators and show up. I’m actually working with a different camera crew, and they just see me.
I have a Yolo(Box Pro) case, and I take my YoloBox (Pro), I take it out, and they’re like, what is that?
They think it’s just a monitor, like a Blackmagic little monitor, whatever, or something like that, a Feelworld monitor. And then they see Facebook and everything booted up. They see, it’s like a little mini computer.
10. What specific features in YoloBox Pro do you use?
I used the bonding. I was using your lower thirds also, that portion.
11. So how many connections do you use for the bonding?
It would be using three. I have three cell devices that are very popular in the United States, and I use your bonding service. I have the little sim card inside, and I got wireless hooked up. And the top USB port I’m using for wireless also, so I’m using three signals when I’m out in a remote area. They don’t have a hard ethernet cable for me to use. I’m using the Internet bonding, which is probably about 90% of the projects that I work on.
I have to have three wireless devices use that bonding service, which we were using it before with LiveU, but the prices with those are outrageous with LiveU, and yet to have their service, and it’s quite expensive yet.
